Newcastle United FC say they have signed Sporting Clube de Portugal's 19-year-old midfield player Hugo Viana.
An announcement on the FA Premiership club's official website claimed that Viana underwent a medical this afternoon and will return to Portugal tomorrow before rejoining his new team-mates for pre-season training next month.
Although personal terms and the medical are still to be confirmed and completed, Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd said: "We are delighted to have secured the services of Hugo for the next five seasons. He is a very exciting attack-minded player who I am sure will be a very good addition to our squad."
If the deal, which is thought to be worth around €12.4m, is sealed it will represent something of a coup for Newcastle manager Bobby Robson, who was in charge of Sporting during the 1992/93 season. Viana was a member of Portugal's Under-21 side at this summer's UEFA European Under-21 Championship and the senior squad at the FIFA World Cup finals in Korea/Japan, although he did not make an appearance in the latter tournament.
