Manuel Machado has stepped down as coach of Vitória SC after the 3-1 defeat by Vitória FC in the sixth round of the Portuguese Cup, although he will remain at the club for the immediate future.
'Accumulation of events'
"It is an accumulation of events that I've had to deal with," said Machado in a post-match press conference on Wednesday. "We have reached our limit due to everything that has been going on, culminating in today's second half. I have asked to be suspended from my duties. This was my last match [with Guimarães] but I will not resign."
"It was not a surprise to me," said Guimarães chairman Vítor Magahães. "After a defeat like this, we tend to act without thinking. But we still have a project and we will discuss the matter in Guimaraes."
César Peixoto steps in
Meanwhile, Magahães also revealed that FC Porto winger César Peixoto will join the club on loan for the remainder of the season, saying: "Yes, I can confirm it. We have reached an agreement with Porto, who will loan us the player until the end of the season."
