Maltese Premier League champions Hibernians FC arrived home today to a heroes welcome after reaching the second qualifying round of the 2002/03 UEFA Champions League.
Hibernians are only the fourth Maltese club to achieve such a feat after their 3-2 aggregate win against Shelbourne FC, a victory sealed in the final moments of Wednesday's second leg in Dublin. Sliema Wanderers FC, Floriana FC and Valletta FC are the other three clubs to advance beyond the first round.
'The result we wanted'
Chuckunyere Ndubisi, who scored the winning goal, said: "I am so very happy to see so many supporters to greet us at the airport today. I can assure them that we will be giving our best again against Boavista [FC] over the two legs in the next round." Goalkeeper Mario Muscat added: "We knew from the start that Shelbourne were going to come straight at us. Our plan functioned to perfection and we finally got the result we wanted."
