Ronaldo late show earns Madrid victory

Ronaldo struck twice as Real Madrid CF defeated Real Sociedad de Fútbol to close in on leaders FC Barcelona.

By Andy Hall

Two late Ronaldo tap-ins gave Real Madrid CF victory at Real Sociedad de Fútbol on Saturday evening to take them to within three points of leaders FC Barcelona.

Karpin chances
Madrid found themselves pitted against a feisty and determined
rival at the Anoeta. On 19 minutes Iker Casillas improvised to block Valeri Karpin's snap shot but was beaten when the Russian unleashed a blistering volley that cannoned against the crossbar.

Riesgo saves
During the second half, Asier Riesgo blocked from Ronaldo then stopped a low drive from Roberto Carlos. A late flurry from Madrid produced the goals. Karpin's miscued pass was quickly distributed to Ronaldo, who dodged past Riesgo to tap in on 82 minutes. The Brazilian backheeled in for 2-0 in added-time. Barcelona are at home to Albacete Balompié on Sunday.

Vicente return
Luis Tevenet prodded in the opening goal for 19th placed CD Numancia who were held by a Valencia CF side boosted by the return of Vicente. The winger levelled from the spot to put his side in fourth place but they could fall further down the order following Sunday's fixtures. Numancia could be relegated should Levante UD beat Málaga CF on Sunday.

Points squandered
The points were also shared in the capital where Club Atlético de Madrid were held 1-1 by Athletic Club Bilbao. The home side went behind on 65 minutes when Joseba Etxeberria cut inside to fire low inside Leo Franco's near post. Atlético reacted quickly and pulled level soon through Gonzalo Colsa, who tapped into an empty net. Neither team's position in the table changes - both share 48 points but Atlético lie a place ahead of the Basque side in eighth due to their superior goal difference.
