Swiss success for Basel

FC Basel 1893 have won their eleventh Swiss championship after beating FC St. Gallen as FC Thun were held.
FC Basel 1893 have won their eleventh Swiss championship after a 3-1 win against FC St. Gallen tonight coincided with a draw for closest rivals FC Thun.

Giménez the hero
Christian Gross's side needed to come from behind for the victory at Saint Jakob Park, which left them eleven points ahead of Thun, who have three games remaining. Alex Tachie-Mensah put St.Gallen in front in the 13th minute only for Basel to equalise through Christian Giménez's header just before the half-hour mark. The in-form Giménez gave Basel the lead four minutes from time with his 26th league goal of the season before Julio Rossi wrapped things up with a last-minute penalty.

Gross relieved
"This match was a perfect mirror of our season. It was very hard," said Gross, who will try to guide his side through the third qualifying round of next season's UEFA Champions League. Basel, who have not lost at home since December 2002, were pushed hard for their third title in four years by Thun.

Thun miss out
The unfancied challengers had been level on points with Basel six games ago but were ultimately to be denied after this evening's 1-1 draw at home against BSC Young Boys. Despite their disappointment, Thun are sure of second and a place in the second qualifying round of the 2005/06 Champions League.
