Gérard Houllier has made his first recruitment as the new coach of French champions Olympique Lyonnais by bringing in Patrice Bergues as his assistant on a two-year deal.
The 58-year-old leaves his post as sporting director at RC Lens to team up with Houllier again, after serving under the former Liverpool FC manager at Anfield between 1998 and 2001, winning the UEFA Cup, FA Cup and English League Cup in the final season. Bergues was also Lens coach from 1992 to 1996, and worked at the National Training Centre at Clairefontaine for two years before moving to Merseyside.
He will work alongside fellow assistant coach Rémi Garde, who signed a two-year contract extension with the four-time Ligue 1 champions earlier this week. The playing staff report for pre-season training on 27 June.
