Greece round-up: AEK held on opening day

Demis Nikolaidis scored for AEK Athens FC as they played out a 1-1 draw against Egaleo FC.
AEK Athens FC's Demis Nikolaidis scored the first goal of the new Ethniki Katigoria season, but his side had to settle for a 1-1 draw against Egaleo FC in their opening game.

First-half goals
Nikolaidis added an excellent finish to some fine approach play by Theodoros Zagorakis on 21 minutes, but shortly before half-time the home side were level with Dimitris Meidanis drilling a free-kick into the AEK goal.

Off the crossbar
Though the second half was goalless, AEK may feel fortunate to have got away with a point as the home side threatened to punish a lacklustre display from the visitors. Giorgos Fotakis's free-kick ricocheted off the AEK crossbar after 71 minutes but his side could not take advantage.

Joy for Aris
FC Aris Thessaloniki were the first winners of the campaign as they prevailed 1-0 at Panahaiki GC. Nikos Kyzeridis scored for a dominant Aris, although their goalkeeper Alexandros Dellos had to make a sharp save to block Franc Istiolles's header.

Four-star PAOK
FC PAOK Thessaloniki produced a four-star performance to beat Panathinaikos FC on Sunday. Just nine minutes had passed when Giorgos Georgiadis struck a 25-metre effort and went on to double his tally from the penalty spot 14 minutes later.

Spasic restores lead
Panathinaikos pulled a goal back through Giasemakis Giasemi's own goal but PAOK restored their two-goal lead three minutes before half-time when Sladjan Spasic found the net.

Bassinas banished
As the players left the field for the interval, Panathinaikos midfield player Angelos Bassinas kicked the ball at the referee and was duly shown his second yellow card. Bassinas remained in the dressing room for the second half and was unable to see his side concede the fourth goal, Pantelis Kafes getting his name on the scoresheet with the help of a deflection.

Nebegleras pounces
Iraklis FC cruised to a 3-0 victory against OFI Crete. Kostas Nebegleras pounced on a loose ball after an unsteady block by OFI goalkeeper Kostas Haniotakis and scored the opener four minutes before half-time. Polish striker Marcin Mieczel doubled the lead in the 69th minute and Vangelis Koutsoures wrapped up the scoring ten minutes later.

Djordjevic decisive
Elsewhere, a solitary Predrag Djordjevic goal eight minutes into the second half was enough to give Olympiakos Pireaus FC a win against top-flight newcomers Kallithea GS and a curling Stavros Lambriakos effort on the hour ensured Xanthi FC started the season with a deserved 1-0 win at Akratitos FC.

Foreign legion
In Neas Smirnis, where just five of the starting 22 players were Greek, Panionios GS overcame Ionikos 2-0. The visitors came close to opening the scoring in the 17th minute when Kahil Said hit the crossbar, but a goal from Petr Vlcek and an Akis Mantzios penalty secured the points for Panionios.

Zaimi settles it
Meanwhile, the derby between Proodeftiki and PAS Giannina FC was settled by Rolan Zaimi's 69th-minute winner for the hosts.
