Romania round-up: Rapid surge to victory

FC Rapid Bucuresti thundered to a 5-2 victory over CS Otelul Galati in Divizia A.

A superb second-half display enabled FC Rapid Bucuresti to record a 5-2 victory over CS Otelul Galati in Divizia A on Sunday.

Bratu on target
Rapid had edged ahead through Valentin Badoi's header in the last minute of a well-fought first half but added four more goals in a thunderous 15-minute spell after half-time. Robert Ilyes found the target, substitute Florin Bratu scored twice in as many minutes and Manuel Godfroid made it 5-0. To their credit, Otelul never gave up and were rewarded when 19-year-old Octavian Bucataru scored twice late on.

Steaua stunned
The day's other game produced a surprising result as FC Steaua Bucuresti were beaten 1-0 at home by FC Politehnica Timisoara, for whom captain Mihai Nicolae converted a 36th-minute penalty.

Prunea dismissed
Saturday's games included FC Universitatea Craiova's 3-2 win away at FCM Bacau. The game hinged on an incident midway through the first half when Universitatea striker Bobi Verdes was pulled down by Bacau goalkeeper Florin Prunea, who was immediately shown the red card.

Lightning Lutu
Ionut Lutu ensured Universitatea pushed home their advantage when he tapped in from five metres and then grabbed a second goal minutes later. But substitutes Florin Petcu and Mircea Ilie brought Bacau back into the game with second-half strikes before Lutu wrapped up his hat-trick ten minutes from the end.

Radu double
Elsewhere, FC National Bucuresti got their second win of the campaign, a 4-1 triumph at home to FC Farul Constanta, thanks to two goals from Sergiu Radu and further strikes from Sabin Ilie and Gabriel Caramarin. Alexandru Baltoi netted for the visitors, for whom Adrian Senin missed a penalty in added time.

Arad hit for six
FC Ceahlaul Piatra Neamt cruised past FC UTA Arad, scoring six goals without reply. Florin Axinia was the hero, scoring twice and setting up two goals for Adrian Solomon and another for Costel Ilie. Constantin Botez also made the scoresheet as newly-promoted Arad continued to struggle in the top flight.

Glorious Gloria
Meanwhile, goals from Alin Minteuan, Sandu Negrean and Cristian Coroian gave FC Gloria Bistrita a 3-0 success against CF Sportul Studentesc and FC Arges-Dacia Pitesti played out a goalless draw with FC Brasov.
