Spain round-up: Atlético deny Barça in thriller

FC Barcelona twice lost the lead as they drew 2-2 with promoted Club Atlético de Madrid.

FC Barcelona twice lost the lead as they were held to a 2-2 draw by promoted Club Atlético de Madrid on the opening Sunday of Spain's Primera División.

Correa saves Atlético
Luis Enrique put Barcelona ahead on five minutes, but Jorge Otero's outrageous cross-shot levelled the scores in first-half added time. Another Luis Enrique goal in the 55th minute restored the home side's lead, but the team from the capital levelled four minutes from the end through substitute Fernando Correa.

Champions win
Valencia CF's title defence opened with a 2-0 win at RCD Mallorca. Gonzalo de los Santos and Ruben Baraja were the scorers as Valencia bounced back from losing 4-0 on aggregate in the Spanish Super Cup to RC Deportivo La Coruña.

Betis on song
Deportivo themselves fared less well, beaten 4-2 at home by a Real Betis Balompié team inspired by new signings Marcos Assunçao and Alfonso. Former AS Roma midfield player Assunçao opened the scoring on 20 minutes and striker Alfonso converted a penalty, before Arzu and Joaquín added further Betis goals.

Musampa hat-trick
Málaga CF's Kizito Musampa scored a hat-trick to help his side to a dramatic 3-2 comeback win after falling two behind to newly promoted RC Recreativo de Huelva, while Real Sociedad's Turkish international Nihat Kahveci was the inspiration behind their 4-2 victory over Athletic Club Bilbao in the Basque derby.

Celta away victory
In Sunday's other games, Deportivo Alavés claimed a 2-2 draw at Real Valladolid - a scoreline mirrored in the game between Villarreal CF and Club Atlético Osasuna - and RC Celta de Vigo won 1-0 at Sevilla FC.

Valladolid gain points
The previous day, Real Valladolid had gained the season's first points with a 1-0 win at Real Racing Club Santander. Real Madrid CF open their campaign against RCD Espanyol on Monday in the week's second match between teams from the Spanish and Catalan capitals.
