Highly-rated midfielder Oleh Gusev has pledged his future to FC Dynamo Kyiv by signing a new five-year deal which will keep him at the Ukrainian Premier League club until January 2011.
The 22-year-old, who has scored once in his 21 caps for his country, was a key part of the Ukraine team that reached next summer's FIFA World Cup finals, the country's first major international tournament. Gusev joined Dynamo from FC Arsenal Kyiv at the end of the 2002/03 season and has subsequently scored 12 goals in 65 league appearances for the Kiev club, including three so far in the current campaign to help Dynamo establish a three-point advantage at the head of the standings after 19 matches.
Speculation has surrounded Gusev's future over the past few months, and Dynamo president Igor Surkis is delighted the matter has now been resolved. "The snowstorm of rumours in Italian and Ukrainian press about AC Milan's alleged interest towards Oleh has had a positive side," he said. "It gives additional advertising to Dynamo and Oleh himself, and proves what we all know already; Gusev is a class player who can play in European competition. However, he would like to conquer Europe with Dynamo and I think five years is just enough for him."
