The 38-year-old agreed the two-year extension until summer 2008 while at the club's winter training camp in Portugal. Although Mainz sit just four points above the relegation zone in Germany, they enjoyed their first taste of European football in this year’s UEFA Cup, after qualifying via the UEFA Fair Play draw.
"Mainz are a fantastic club," said Klopp, who made 325 appearances for the club as a player between 1990 and 2001. "Our great project will still go on. It is a big challenge for me and it is so much fun." Klopp's assistant coaches Željko Buvac and Stephan Kuhnert have also extended their contracts for another two seasons.
Mainz general manager Christian Heidel said: "For us,
Klopp is the best coach we could have. He has been the mastermind behind the most successful period in the club's history and he is a positive role model." Klopp's deal will be valid even if the team are relegated from the Bundesliga, with the coach having guided the club to promotion at the end of 2003/04.
