Kovačević opts for surgery

News round-up: FK Crvena Zvezda captain Nenad Kovačević must undergo a knee operation while there is more bad news for Deportivo La Coruña.

FK Crvena Zvezda captain Nenad Kovačević is to undergo surgery for a meniscus injury. The midfielder sustained a blow to his left knee in Crvena Zvezda's UEFA Cup group game against RC Strasbourg in December, and suffered a recurrence at the club's training camp in Cyprus. The 25-year-old is expected to return in time for the Serbo-Montenegrin First League's restart on 18 February.

Iván Carril is the latest addition to RC Deportivo La Coruña's injury list after the 20-year-old forward tore a calf muscle in Thursday's Spanish Cup tie against Valencia CF. The club confirmed he will be out for around four weeks. Deportivo are also missing playmaker Juan Carlos Valerón for the rest of the season after he suffered a cruciate ligament injury on Sunday.

Celtic FC manager Gordon Strachan has said veteran midfielder Roy Keane will be back within ten days after suffering a hamstring injury, countering media reports that the former Manchester United FC captain would be out for six weeks. "It's a nerve thing. He'll probably be able to do some light training on Monday," Strachan said.

There was less good news for Heart of Midlothian FC winger Neil McCann, who faces two months on the sidelines after damaging medial knee ligaments on his debut. The 31-year-old started his second spell at Tynecastle last week after being released by Southampton FC.

VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach will be without Krisztián Lisztes for at least six weeks. The Hungary midfielder had to undergo a knee operation after suffering a meniscus injury. The 29-year-old has been capped 49 times by his country but has made just five Bundesliga appearances this season.

Also in Germany, Under-19 international Timo Kunert has been given a professional contract by UEFA Cup contenders FC Schalke 04. The 18-year-old midfielder has agreed a two-year deal beginning next summer.

Germany coach Jürgen Klinsmann has invited a squad of 28 players to a training camp in Dusseldorf in the last two days of January. Christian Wörns and Sebastian Kehl from BV Borussia Dortmund are included in the group, after some impressive recent performances.
