Hungary round-up: Shock defeat for Ferencváros

Békéscsabai EFC won 1-0 at Ferencvárosi TC while leaders MTK Hungária FC could only draw.

Békéscsabai EFC produced the greatest surprise in the 14th round of matches in the Hungarian First Division on Friday, as Lajos Garamvölgyi’s side beat second-placed Ferencvárosi TC 1-0 at the Üllõi úti stadium.
Sweet return
Békéscsaba stunned the home crowd, with former Ferencváros striker András Keresztúri returning to haunt his former employers as he grabbed the only goal of the game, finishing off a swift counterattack to seal a shock win.

Missed opportunity
Leaders MTK Hungária FC missed the chance to capitalise on their rivals’ defeat, as they could only draw 0-0 at Debreceni VSC. However, their lead at the top of the table is still five points.

Györ go second
Third-placed Györi ETO FC took advantage of the lapses from the top two sides to move into second place and close the gap on the leaders following a 1-0 win over an out-of-form Dunaferr SE side. Midfield playerer Károly Szanyó scored the only goal of the game five minutes before half-time.

Top of the table clash
The win leaves the home side in a strong position ahead of next week’s clash with leaders MTK. Györ coach Zsolt Tamás was in buoyant mood after the match, claiming, “It is not in question that now we are now fighting for the title, and we are in the best way.”

Champions win
Siófoki BSE secured a home win over Kispest Honvéd FC, goals from former international midfield player Zsolt Bárányos and Zoltán Herczegfalvi sealing a 2-0 victory. Elsewhere, champions Zalaegerszegi TE beat MFC Sopron 3-0 at home thanks to two goals from striker István Faragó and one from international striker Gábor Egressy.

Újpest back on track
Újpesti TE bounced back from their shock midweek elimination from the Hungarian Cup by beating Videoton FC Fehérvár 2-1 at the Megyeri úti stadium. Two goals from Zoltán Kovács put the home side in command, before Norbert Tóth pulled a goal back for the visitors.
