AEK Athens FC have appointed Spaniard Lorenzo Serra Ferrer as their new coach.

Back to work
Serra Ferrer, who resigned from his post in charge of Real Betis Balompié last Thursday, takes the helm of a team destined for the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round after finishing second in Greece's Alpha Ethniki. He replaces Fernando Santos who left AEK for the SL Benfica job in his native Portugal.

Credentials
Serra Ferrer, 53, guided Betis to UEFA Champions League qualification in 2004/05 and then steered the Seville club into the group stage from the third qualifying round last August. His side also lifted the Spanish Cup in 2005. Serra Ferrer previously coached RCD Mallorca before his first stint at Betis preceded a short spell as FC Barcelona's caretaker boss in 2000/01.
