RC Strasbourg claimed fifth place in France's Ligue 1 with a 1-0 Sunday victory at home to AS Monaco FC.

The visitors had the best of the first-half chances, but on 36 minutes Strasbourg were ahead when Christian Bassila's diving header converted Yves Deroff's cross.

Strasbourg then took control for the rest of the match, and in the final quarter-hour Deroff hit the post, Danijel Luboja's shot struck the crossbar and Ulrich Le Pen forced Monaco goalkeeper Flavio Roma into a fine save.

Five points behind
However, the single goal was enough for Strasbourg, who are five points behind leaders OGC Nice.
