Athletic Club Bilbao midfielder Roberto Martínez 'Tiko' will be sidelined for seven months after suffering a cruciate ligament injury playing for the Basque Country.

Athletic Club Bilbao midfielder Roberto Martínez 'Tiko' will be sidelined for seven months after suffering a cruciate ligament injury playing for the Basque Country in an unofficial international against Catalonia on Sunday.

Surgery needed
The 30-year-old tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during his appearance as a substitute at the Camp Nou and will undergo surgery in a month's time, when the knee has settled down. Tiko's absence will be a blow to an Athletic side lying second from bottom in Spain's Primera División. The former CA Osasuna trainee has scored 21 goals in 193 league games during a seven-season stay at San Mamés.
