Sporting Clube de Portugal have moved to secure the services of one of their most promising players by agreeing a new long-term contract with defender Miguel Veloso.

Opportunity seized
The 20-year-old centre-back, part of the Portugal side that lifted the UEFA European Under-17 Championship on home soil in 2003 and who has since gone on to win international recognition at U21 level, has put pen to paper on a deal that will keep him at the Estádio José Alvalade until 2013. Veloso spent last season on loan at third division side CD Olivais e Moscavide and helped them win promotion before being recalled by Sporting, for whom he played in five UEFA Champions League games before Christmas as the Lisbon side finished bottom of Group B, in addition to his seven Liga appearances this season.
