Greece round-up: Panathinaikos climb to summit

Panathinaikos FC took first place at the halfway point of the season after a 3-1 victory at Akratitos FC.

Panathinaikos FC's charge up the Hellenic National League table has seen them take first place at the halfway point of the season after a 3-1 victory at Akratitos FC.

Unbeaten run
Struggling Akratitos took the lead on six minutes through Stathis Stefanidis's long-range effort. But Jan Michaelsen levelled the scores on the quarter-hour and by the 25th minute Panathinaikos were 3-1 up, courtesy of a shot from Nikos Lyberopoulos and an own goal by Nikos Meserdis, to stretch the new leaders' unbeaten run to 12 games, having lost their first three fixtures this season.

Olympiakos held
Champions Olympiakos Piraeus FC conceded top spot to Panathinaikos as they were held 1-1 at home by Xanthi FC. After dominating the match, Olympiakos finally took the lead in the 73rd minute through Lambros Houtos. But five minutes later former Olympiakos player Stelios Sfakianakis denied his old side victory with a looping header.

PAOK win
Olympiakos are now two points behind Panathinaikos, as are FC PAOK Thessaloniki - visitors to the leaders next week - who cemented third place with a 1-0 victory against PAS Giannina FC. The league's top scorer Giorgos Georgiadis became the first player to reach ten goals this season with a 22nd-minute effort in a match played in Kavala, as PAOK's stadium was closed due to crowd disturbances against local rivals Aris Thessaloniki FC.

Panionios into top five
AEK Athens FC lost ground on the top three as they were held 1-1 at high-flying Panionios FC. AEK, playing without Demis Nikolaidis and Vassilis Tsartas - both in dispute with club's majority shareholder Makis Psomiadis - took the lead in the seventh minute though Dimitris Nalitzis, who was first to the rebound after hitting the post. But Vangelis Mantzios headed Paninios level with 21 minutes left, and they are now up to fifth place.

Iraklis on form
Aris are down to seventh, as their top six place was taken by their hosts Iraklis FC, who secured a 4-0 win in the
Thessaloniki derby. Attacking from the start, Iraklis were ahead on eleven minutes though Takis Gonias and the lead was 3-0 by half-time, Ireoklis Stoltidis and Marcin Mieczel scoring. Stoltidis headed his second goal 17 minutes from the end.

Point for Panaihiki
Elsewhere, bottom-placed Panahaiki FC picked up only their fifth point of the season by holding Ionikos FC 0-0, while OFI Crete FC moved further away from the relegation zone with a 2-1 win against Kallithea GS and Egaleo FC overcame Proodeftiki FC 1-0.
