Ajax hamstrung by Stam loss

The AFC Ajax captain Jaap Stam sustained a hamstring injury at the weekend which looks likely to keep the 34-year-old out of the Dutch Eredivisie run-in.
The AFC Ajax captain Jaap Stam sustained a hamstring injury during Sunday's defeat of Heracles Almelo which threatens to keep him out of the final four games of the season as the Amsterdam club look to wrest back the Dutch title from PSV Eindhoven.

Hamstring
Stam has started 25 Eredivisie matches since returning to the Netherlands from AC Milan last summer, but Ajax fear a "lay-off of several weeks" for the 34-year-old central defender, with the strain in his left leg hurting their chances of a first championship in three years. Ajax, who are just three points adrift of leaders PSV, saw Stam's fellow defender Zdeněk Grygera sidelined until May last week.
