Goalkeeper Jörg Butt has cancelled his contract with Bayer 04 Leverkusen and will leave the club with immediate effect. Second fiddle
The 32-year-old's contract was due to expire in the summer of 2009 but he chose to activate a clause allowing him to leave if he failed to appear in half of the games during the second half of the season. Butt has played in 21 games this campaign but has been forced to play second fiddle to young René Adler since the end of February. 'Great work'
Leverkusen managing director Wolfgang Holzhäuser said: "We understand Hans-Jörg Butt's decision. He has done great work for the club." Butt has played 190 league games in six seasons with Leverkusen, who are sixth in the Bundesliga. Also an excellent penalty taker, Butt was in goal as Leverkusen reached the 2001/02 UEFA Champions League final, losing 2-1 to Real Madrid CF.
