Serie B champions Juventus have made another foray into the summer transfer market by signing Portuguese international Tiago from Olympique Lyonnais together with Empoli FC's Argentinian midfielder Sergio Bernardo Almirón.
Having already landed left-back Cristian Molinaro, midfielder Antonio Nocerino and striker Vincenzo Iaquinta this month, coach Claudio Ranieri has not hesitated to continue his recruitment drive. Midfielder Tiago arrives from French title-holders Lyon with Juventus paying around €13m for the 26-year-old, while the versatile Almirón, also 26, moves to Turin for a reported €9m. Both players have agreed contracts until 2012.
Tiago started his professional career in 1999 with SC Braga before joining SL Benfica three years later. In summer 2004 José Mourinho took his compatriot to Chelsea FC but he lasted only one campaign before switching to Lyon, where he won two Ligue 1 championships. Almirón has been in Italy since 2001 when he left CA Newell's Old Boys for Udinese Calcio. After two terms he was transferred to Hellas-Verona FC and then, 12 months later, to Empoli whom he helped to promotion to Serie A. In 2006/07 Almirón made 30 appearances, scoring six goals.
