FC Barcelona captain Carles Puyol may miss the first month of the new Spanish season and the start of the UEFA Champions League with a knee injury.

Surgery needed
The 29-year-old defender, who played 35 of Barça's 38 games as they finished runners-up in Spain, suffered ligament damage in his left knee during a friendly played in South Africa against Mamelodi Sundowns FC on Wednesday. Puyol underwent surgery yesterday in Barcelona, with the initial fear being that he will be out of action for three months. Were this to be realised, Puyol would miss out on the start of both the new Primera División campaign on 25 August and the UEFA Champions League group stage on 18/19 September.
