Mifsud takes the honours in Malta

Michael Mifsud was voted Malta's Sportsman of the Year for 2007 at a gala which also saw the national team and MFA president Joseph Mifsud honoured.

Michael Mifsud was named as Malta's Sportsman of the Year for 2007 on Sunday, the day after after scoring the winner for Coventry City FC in an FA Cup fourth-round tie against Millwall FC.

Winning goal
The 26-year-old striker has scored nine goals in the second tier of English football for Coventry this term and seven more in England’s two big cup competitions, including two-goal salvos against Premier League clubs Manchester United FC and Blackburn Rovers FC. Mifsud told uefa.com: "I have been having a great time since I joined Coventry and this award is reward for the dedication and the hard work I have put in this season."

Transfer talk
The 53-times capped international, who also struck three times in qualifying for UEFA EURO 2008™, is rumoured to be a target for a number of bigger clubs. Mifsud said: "I have not heard anything concrete at the moment. My ambition as a professional player remains to play in the English Premier League, but for that I will have to take things cautiously."

Brave performances
In other awards, Dr Joseph Mifsud, President of the Malta Football Association, was voted the island's Official of the Year for 2007 while the national side took the Team of the Year honours. Dušan Fitzel's team finished bottom of UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifying Group C, but put in a series of great performances, earning a 2-1 home win against Hungary, a 1-1 draw in Moldova and a 2-2 draw at home against Turkey.
