Wieghorst offers Babbel hope

Morten Wieghorst has expressed his support for Liverpool FC defender Markus Babbel who has been diagnosed with the Guillan-Barre syndrome.

Morten Wieghorst has offered to help Liverpool FC defender Markus Babbel in any way possible after the German international was diagnosed with the Guillan-Barre syndrome, an illness which attacks the nervous system.

Eleven days on a respirator
The Celtic FC midfielder was struck down by the disease last October and spent eleven days on a respirator. He made an unexpected return to first-team action when UEFA Cup contenders Celtic FC beat Stirling Albion FC in the Scottish League Cup at the beginning of November.

Out since August
Babbel, who has not played since August, is expected to be out for a further three months but Wieghorst knows from bitter experience that the German defender could find himself sidelined for a much longer period of time. "I wish him all the best," he said. "If there was anything I could do I would do it. I am sure he is mentally strong and will have plenty of support from his friends and family. I had fantastic support from the club when I needed it and I am sure Markus will have the same."
