Italy round-up: Totti treble inspires Roma

Francesco Totti scored a hat-trick as AS Roma secured their first Serie A win of the season with a 3-2 victory at Brescia Calcio.

Srnicek beaten
Roma, who had lost both their opening league games and are still without a victory in the UEFA Champions League, went ahead on the half hour through Totti's successful penalty. The Italian international soon doubled the advantage with a superb 25-metre free-kick which curled past Pavel Srnicek in the Brescia goal.

Filippini off
Brescia were hit further when Antonio Filippini's simulation earned him a second yellow card on 44 minutes but the ten men were given hope when they were awarded a penalty a minute later. Roberto Baggio's shot from the spot was saved by Roma goalkeeper Francesco Antonioli, but the referee awarded another penalty after Igli Tare was fouled as he rushed for the loose ball. Baggio made no mistake second time around.

Dellas sees red
A second red card was flourished as Traianos Dellas received his marching orders for a late tackle on Jonathan Bachini midway through the second half, but with nine minutes to go, Totti restored Roma's two-goal cushion with a magnificent solo effort, dribbling in from the left flank before unleashing a powerful drive past Srnicek. Brescia pulled a goal back through Austrian Markus Schopp but lost hope when Bachini became the third player to see red at the death and Roma hung on for the points.

Vieri on form
Two goals from Christian Vieri helped Internazionale FC beat AC Chievo Verona to climb to the top of the table. Chievo swept into a shock lead after just two minutes when Massimo Marazzina headed past Francesco Toldo, but Inter soon levelled through Vieri. The Italian international then struck a 78th-minute winner from the penalty spot. However, Inter's third successive victory was soured by the last-minute dismissal of Sergio Conceição for foul and abusive language.

Piacenza stopped
Elsewhere, Piacenza FC's winning start ended with a 1-0 defeat at Bologna FC, for whom 18-year-old Luigi Della Rocca scored his first ever Serie A goal, and promoted Empoli FC moved up to fourth with a 3-1 win at AC Perugia. Benito Carbone's 17th-minute penalty put Como Calcio ahead against fellow top-flight newcomers Reggina Calcio but Japan's Shunsuke Nakamura levelled the match from the same spot midway through the second half.

Sculli double
In the day's other games, Giuseppe Sculli, scorer of Modena FC's winner against Roma last week, struck both his team's goals in the 2-1 win against pointless Torino Calcio, and a solitary Nestor Sensini goal gave Udinese Calcio victory in their encounter with struggling Atalanta BC.
