Turkey round-up: Besiktas receive timely boost

Besiktas JK prepared for their UEFA Cup encounter with FC Dynamo Kyiv by stealing top spot.

Besiktas JK prepared for their UEFA Cup encounter with FC Dynamo Kyiv next week by going top of the Turkish Super League at the expense of Galatasaray SK.

Easy win
Ercan Ünal helped Besiktas on their way to a 3-0 defeat of Adanaspor A.S. with an own goal, Daniel Pancu was on target on 33 minutes and Eser Yagmur’s header two minutes from time completed a comfortable victory.

Slip-up
Galatasaray would have gone top with a win but were nudged second when they fell 1-0 to Gençlerbirligi following Serkan Balci’s 24th minute goal.

Form dips
Gaziantepspor’s purple patch came to an end when they lost 2-1 to lowly Göztepe, going down to a Cumhur Bozaci strike and an own goal from Bülent Bölükbasi’s after a mistake from goalkeeper Ömer Çatkiç. They at least had the consolation of seeing Cesar score with a spectacular overhead kick.

Another own goal
Trabzonspor recorded a 3-0 win over MKE Ankaragücü, Fatih Tekke burying a powerful header from a Gökdeniz Karadeniz cross on 20 minutes before defender Gökmen Baris was another defender unfortunate enough to gift an own goal. Erman Özgür’s shot from distance rounded off matters on 71 minutes.

Tough time
Fenerbahçe SK were given a tougher time in their 2-1 defeat of Kocaelispor. Washington collected a pass from Serhat Akin to head his team into the lead on 18 minutes, but the home side equalised on 18 minutes through Emrah Eren. Argentinian international Ariel Ortega sealed the victory with fifteen minutes to go.

Altay win
Elsewhere, Altay GK, put paid to their inconsistent league run this week by handing a 4-2 reverse to Samsunspor, who started the second half with a 1-0 advantage after Serkan Aykut’s goal on the cusp of half time.

Roll-over
Altay equalised through a Fatih Egedik a header and Sinan Kaloglu broke the deadlock before Ümit made it 3-1 from the penalty spot and Inanç Gültekin hit another one for good measure.

Draws galore
Diyarbakirspor held Denizlispor to a goalless draw at home while Malatyaspor and Istanbulspor A.S. shared the spoils with an identical scoreline in Istanbul. Bursaspor and Elazigspor fought out a 1-1 draw.
