France round-up: Losing start for Lyon

A debut goal from Jean Makoun gave Lille OSC an unexpected 1-0 win against French champions Olympique Lyonnais as Ligue 1 kicked off on Friday night.

Early winner
The 20-year-old midfield player converted a fine cross by Gregory Tafforeau to send the ball past Lyon's French international goalkeeper Grégory Coupet from close range in the 12th minute. The defeat meant that Lyon have not won on the opening day of the season since returning to the top flight in 1989.

Solid defending
Lyon controlled the majority of the match, but struggled to break down a solid and well-organised Lille defence and created just one clear chance to equalise. However, Brazilian defender Edmilson could only head Vikash Dhorasoo's free-kick over the crossbar on the hour.

Sterjovski denied
For all the visitors' pressure, Lille came closest to scoring, as striker Mile Sterjovski had a golden chance to seal the victory 15 minutes from time only to see his effort rebound off the woodwork. 
 
'Gifted team'
"We have a very young team but they are gifted," said Lille coach Claude Puel. "It's a very satisfying result. "We could have counterattacked more efficiently, but I'm happy with the outcome. We are league leaders now and that doesn't happen often."

Tough start
On Saturday, Olympique de Marseille are away to En Avant Guingamp while AS Monaco FC, second last season, begin with a tough home game against FC Girondins de Bordeaux.

First three points
The sides who finished in second and third place, AS Monaco FC and Olympique de Marseille, last season both made winning starts to the new season, against FC Girondins de Bordeaux and En Avant Guingamp respectively.

Scoring start
Shabani Nonda, 2002/03's top scorer with 26 league goals, scored both of Monaco's goals in a 2-0 home victory, breaking the deadlock two minutes past the half-hour with a 18-metre free-kick. The striker scored his side's second from the penalty spot shortly before the hour after Bordeaux defender Mauricio Pochettino had fouled Jaroslav Plasil.

Late winner
It had seemed as if Marseille would be held at Guingamp, only from Ibrahima Bakayoko to score the winning goal a minute from time, converting Didier Drogba's pass. Elsewhere, Paris Saint-Germain FC were held to a goalless draw at home by SC Bastia.

Nice win
Goals from Lilian Laslandes and Romain Pitau early in each half helped OGC Nice to a 2-1 win at AJ Auxerre, whose only reply came two minutes from time through Jean-Sébastien Jaures from the penalty spot. Newly-promoted Le Mans UC 72 earned a creditable 0-0 draw at RC Lens.
 
Narrow victory
A goal from Hoalid Regragui gave AC Ajaccio a 1-0 win at FC Metz, while Fode Mansaré earned Montpellier Hérault SC a 1-1 draw against Stade Rennais FC, with Abedslam Ouaddou having giving the visitors a first-half lead.  
 
Sochaux success
Jaouad Zairi scored a last-minute winner to give FC Sochaux-Montbéliard a 2-1 win against FC Nantes Atlantique, while Toulouse FC drew 1-1 at home to RC Strasbourg.
