Bothroyd pegs back Wolfsburg

AC Perugia 1-0 VfL Wolfsburg Jay Bothroyd's goal gives Perugia a slender advantage.

A goal from English striker Jay Bothroyd gave AC Perugia a 1-0 lead to take into the second leg of their UEFA Intertoto Cup final against VfL Wolfsburg, but they may be left to regret not taking further advantage in a match they dominated.

Busy goalkeeper
While Wolfsburg's high-profile Argentinian signing Andres D'Alessandro made a nuisance of himself at times, it was goalkeeper Simon Jentzch who was the busiest of the German side's players.

Misplaced clearance
However, it was the goalkeeper who gifted Bothroyd what proved to be the only goal of the night after 39 minutes. The goalkeeper could only half clear Zé Maria's shot with his fist and in the resulting melee, the former Coventry City FC player was in the right place at the right time to score - just as he had done in the tournament's previous two rounds.

Solid defending
The German side tried to up the pace of the game in the second half but they found the Perugia defence in impassive form. Perugia launched some dangerous counterattacks as Wolfsburg struggled to find their rhythm. Jürgen Röber's side will still feel they have a chance in the second leg on 26 August though.
