Villarreal celebrate cup first

Villarreal CF 0-0 SC Heerenveen (Agg: 2-1 ) Villarreal to play UEFA Cup football for the first time.

Villarreal CF will play UEFA Cup football for the first time in their history after a goalless draw in their UEFA Intertoto Cup final second leg against Dutch side SC Heerenveen secured a narrow aggregate win.

Quiet encounter
The Primera División outfit had the better of a predominately quiet encounter at El Madrigal, and progress thanks to the 2-1 victory in the Netherlands a fortnight ago. Both sides spent most of the second match concentrating on not making a mistake rather than creating a goal.

Long-range shots
Villarreal's summer signing José Mari fired just past the Heerenveen post from long range midway through the first half, before again trying his luck from distance in the second half. Former FC Barcelona goalkeeper José Reina saved Heerenveen's only opportunity.

Good skill
Finnish midfield player Mika Väyrynen showed good skill to create the chance, but his subsequent shot was well stopped by Reina. The UEFA Cup draw takes place on Friday.
