Göteborg pull off Ijeh coup

IFK Göteborg have completed the surprise signing of Nigerian striker Peter Ijeh.

IFK Göteborg have signed Nigerian striker Peter Ijeh from Malmö FF in one of the most unexpected Allsvenskan transfers of recent times.

Lethal partnership
Ijeh, who joined Malmö ahead of the 2001 season, scored 38 goals in 60 matches for the club during his three-year stay, forming one of Sweden's most lethal striking partnerships with Niklas Skoog. However, he was out of contract and elected to move to Göteborg on a free transfer, signing a two-year contract.

Change of scene
"I've been at Malmö for three years now and I needed a change of scene," he said. "The fact that I have cousins in Gothenburg was also important."

Johansson delighted
Göteborg coach Bo Johansson expressed his delight with the transfer coup, saying: "Ijeh is a very good player and the type of player we were missing last season. This is another piece in the jigsaw for next year." Göteborg, 17-time champions of Sweden but without a title since 1996, finished seventh last season.
