Dominant Ferencváros march on

Monthly review: Double winners Ferencvárosi TC continue to set the standard in Hungary.

By Márton Dinnyés

Double winners Ferencvárosi TC have begun the new campaign in the same dominant form as they finished the last.

First defeat
The Budapest side beat Nyíregyházi FC 5-0 on Sunday evening to make it five wins from their opening six games, despite missing a number of key players through injury and suspension. The result was a good response by Csaba László's side after losing for the first time this season away to Kaposvári Rákóczi FC the previous weekend.

Surprise outfit
Pápa TFC are the surprise of the season so far, and are second behind Ferencváros. Pápa beat fellow newcomers Vasas SC 2-0 on Saturday, to record their fourth victory of the season and they remain just two points behind the leaders. The result spelt the end for Vasas coach Zsolt Tamási who was dismissed after the game. Former MTK Hungária FC and Dunaferr SE coach, Sándor Egervári, is favourite to take his place.

Tóth on target
Last season's top scorer Mihály Tóth scored twice and set up two more as MFC Sopron thrashed Újpest FC 4-1 to win their first game of the season on Sunday. It capped off a miserable week for the home side who were also beaten by VfB Stuttgart at home in the first round of the UEFA Cup on Thursday.

ZTE unbeaten
Zalaegerszegi TE are the only side still unbeaten and are fifth with a game in hand. Imre Gellei's team could have been even better placed but could not break the deadlock against Videoton FCF at the weekend and had to settle for a point.

Troubled Balaton
Balaton FC remain rooted to the foot of the table without a point after losing each of their opening five games. A disastrous season threatens to get worse for the Miskolc side, who have had their licence withdrawn by the Hungarian Football League because of financial irregularities. The decision is under appeal.
