Di Michele double
These two teams had already met at the San Siro ten days ago when Milan emerged 3-1 winners in Serie A, and Carlo Ancelotti's side looked to be on course for another success in the 17th minute when Ambrosini rose to head in a Serginho cross. However, the visitors drew level four minutes later through David Di Michele, and the same player struck again eight minutes before half-time to turn the match in Udinese's favour.
Late free-kick
Seven minutes past the hour, however, Milan drew level with a similar strike to their opening goal, Ambrosini again converting Serginho's cross to make the score 2-2. Milan were able to welcome back striker Filippo Inzaghi, a 70th-minute substitute for his first appearance since 20 October, and snatched victory with six minutes remaining as Serginho curled in a splendid free-kick from 20 metres.
Slender lead
AS Roma earned a narrow success in tonight's other quarter-final first leg, Daniele De Rossi's solitary strike proving sufficient for a 1-0 success at the Stadio Olimpico that inflicted defeat on Dino Zoff in his first match in charge of ACF Fiorentina. Zoff replaced Sergio Buso after Roma won Sunday's Serie A game between the two sides 2-1 in Florence.
Headed winner
The only goal of tonight's encounter arrived five minutes before half-time, Gaetano D'Agostino's pinpoint free-kick picking out De Rossi, who beat Cristiano Lupatelli in the Fiorentina goal with a firm header. The visitors came close to equalising in the second-half, but Fabrizio Miccoli's drive was saved superbly by Carlo Zotti.
