Helleputte handed Westerlo reins

Belgian side KVC Westerlo have appointed Herman Helleputte as their new coach to replace Jan Ceulemans.

Ceulemans move
The 51-year-old Helleputte signed a two-year deal today, and admits he faces a tough task succeeding Ceulemans who left to take over at Club Brugge KV on Saturday. The former Belgian international had been in charge at Westerlo since 1999, guiding them to the Belgian Cup in 2001.

'Make us happy'
"Jan [Ceulemans] is a legend, and will also become a legend in Brugge," said Helleputte. "But in football, the players have to do it themselves and when I see the quality here, I think it must be possible to make myself, the club, the players and the supporters happy."

Beveren reign
Having coached a number of teams including K. Lierse SK and KFC Germinal Beerschot Antwerpen, Helleputte recently spent three seasons at KSK Beveren, leading them to the Belgian Cup final in 2004 and the UEFA Cup group stage last term.
