Canobbio floors Fenerbahçe

RC Celta de Vigo 1-0 Fenerbahçe SK Fabián Canobbio's late free-kick gave Celta real hope of claiming a place in the tournament's Round of 32.

Celta move second
Fabián Canobbio scored the only goal 13 minutes from the end, yet things could have been very different for the Turkish visitors had Alex managed to convert an early spot-kick. The result takes Celta above their opponents, into second place in Group H on four points, although both teams still need something from their final matches in two weeks' time to progress.

Alex denied
It was Zico's Fenerbahçe who had the first chance to break the deadlock when Ángel López conceded a penalty with a clumsy challenge on Tuncay Şanlı after eleven minutes. Alex stepped up to take responsibility but Celta goalkeeper Esteban Suárez got a hand to the ball to deny the Brazilian midfielder. It was a huge let-off for the hosts and they responded with a powerful strike from Canobbio which was tipped around the post by Volkan Demirel.

Fenerbahçe take control
That was as good as it got for the Spanish side in the first half, however, as Fenerbahçe took control. Alex tried to make amends for his miss with a shot from distance that sailed over, while Suárez was again called into action to turn away a 15-metre strike from Mateja Kežman. The Serbia forward wasted further opportunities, firing wide on 40 minutes before his volley from Alex's corner also flew past the upright.

Luck with hosts
Celta coach Fernando Vazquez would have been disappointed with his team's first-half display, but there were signs of improvement after the interval and Demirel did well to hold a fierce drive from Fernando Baiano. Fenerbahçe waited patiently for an opening, yet when it came Alex was again frustrated as his 56th-minute header came back off the woodwork. The luck appeared to be with Celta, and that proved the case when they scored the decider with Canobbio curling in a 20-metre free-kick following Lugano's foul on Nené.
