Victory or bust for PSG

Paris Saint-Germain FC know that a victory is essential as they look to salvage a UEFA Cup Round of 32 place against Group G leaders Panathinaikos FC.

• With goalless draws against AFC Rapid Bucuresti and FK Mladá Boleslav either side of a 4-2 home defeat by Hapoel Tel-Aviv FC, PSG will be eliminated if they fail to win, but victory could see them finish as high as second in the section.

• Panathinaikos are already through to the knockout rounds. They won 2-0 against Hapoel and 1-0 at Mladá Boleslav before drawing 0-0 at home against Rapid. They could miss out on first place in the section if a loss at PSG coincides with a win for Hapoel which results in the Israeli side ending up with a better goal difference.

• The side finishing top of the section is guaranteed a tie against one of the third-placed finishers from another group in the draw for the Round of 32 on 15 December, while each pool runner-up will meet one of the third-placed finishers from the UEFA Champions League.

• The two sides have never met in European competition.

• PSG coach Guy Lacombe led his FC Sochaux-Montbéliard side into three games against Greek opposition in the 2004/05 UEFA Cup group stage. Having won 1-0 against Panionios NFC in the group stage, his side bowed out of the Round of 32 after twice losing 1-0 against Panathinaikos's arch-rivals Olympiacos CFP.

• Panathinaikos's Spanish coach Víctor Muñoz has experience of French opposition. His Villarreal CF side won 3-0 against ES Troyes AC in the 2002 UEFA Intertoto Cup, and he also took on Ligue 1 sides on several occasions as a player.

• In the 1989/90 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup semi-finals, his UC Sampdoria side earned a 4-2 aggregate win against AS Monaco FC which was revenge of sorts for a 6-5 aggregate defeat by FC Metz for Muñoz's FC Barcelona in the first round of the same competition five years earlier.

• Muñoz was also on the losing side with Spain as France won the final of the 1984 UEFA European Championship 2-0 in Paris.

• Panathinaikos's Argentinian midfielder Sebastián Romero spent a brief spell in France on loan with Toulouse FC in the 2000/01 season, scoring once in seven Ligue 1 appearances.

• PSG have been drawn against Greek opposition on two previous occasions, playing four games.

• They won 5-0 on aggregate against PAOK FC in the first round of the 1992/93 UEFA Cup and 3-0 on aggregate against AEK Athens FC in the 1996/97 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup quarter-finals.

• They have won three games against Greek sides and drawn once, with one win and one draw from their home games.

• They are yet to concede a goal against Greek opposition.

• Panathinaikos have played four UEFA Champions League group stage games and two two-legged European ties against French opponents.

• In total they have won three and lost three against French opposition, drawing twice.

• In France, they have drawn twice and lost twice and have not scored on French soil since a 3-2 defeat by AJ Auxerre in the 1987/88 UEFA Cup first round.
