Nottingham Forest FC, struggling at the wrong end of the English second division, scored the upset of the day when they won 3-0 at Premier League Manchester City FC in the FA Cup third round on Saturday.

Stoke out
Goals from Nathan Tyson, Robert Earnshaw and Joe Garner condemned City to an early exit. League One (third division) Hartlepool United FC also caused a major shock when they beat Premier League Stoke City FC 2-0 at Victoria Park to reach the fourth round for only the sixth time. Southend United FC, also in League One, had an afternoon to remember by forcing a 1-1 draw at Chelsea FC with Peter Clarke equalising at Stamford Bridge in added time on his 27th birthday. Salomon Kalou had put Chelsea ahead after 31 minutes.

Holders held
FA Cup holders Portsmouth dominated for long periods against Championship (second division) side Bristol City FC who forced a replay after a goalless draw at Fratton Park. Top-flight West Bromwich Albion FC were also held, finishing 1-1 against League One Peterborough United FC. There were no such problems for Arsenal FC who beat Plymouth Argyle 3-1, or West Ham United FC as Gianfranco Zola's side put three unanswered goals past Barnsley FC, another Championship side.

Giants pushed
Fernando Torres marked his first appearance since late November with an added-time goal as Liverpool FC won 2-0 at Preston North End FC, while Everton FC, Middlesbrough FC and Fulham FC all triumphed by one goal against lower-league opposition. In two all-Premier League ties, Sunderland AFC beat Bolton Wanderers FC and Hull City AFC-Newcastle United FC finished goalless. Aston Villa FC travel to Gillingham FC on Sunday before Manchester United FC face Southampton FC on the south coast.
