Stevens to succeed Adriaanse at Salzburg

Former PSV Eindhoven coach Huub Stevens will take charge of FC Salzburg after signing a two-year contract with the Austrian Bundesliga leaders.

Fresh direction
Stevens, who resigned from the PSV helm in January, will begin work at Salzburg on 1 July. The 55-year-old Dutchman will replace compatriot Co Adriaanse after Salzburg decided they needed new direction for next season.

International experience
Salzburg sporting director Heinz Hochhauser said of the appointment: "We are delighted to have found an experienced, internationally renowned coach. We are confident he will play a key role in helping us fulfil our international ambitions." Former Dutch international defender Stevens led FC Schalke 04 to UEFA Cup glory in 1997, before spells with Hertha BSC Berlin, 1. FC Köln, Roda JC, Hamburger SV and, from last summer, PSV.

Musical chairs
"The facilities here, the club's development and its ambitions made it an easy decision to sign here," he said of the move. Adriaanse, the man Stevens will succeed, has taken Salzburg ten points clear of the chasing pack in the Bundesliga with six games to play. The 61-year-old had taken up the position in July 2008 following the departure of Giovanni Trapattoni.
