Sevilla FC parted company with coach Manuel Jiménez after a 1-1 home draw against the bottom club Xerez CD extended their winless run in all competitions to seven games.
Xerez struck an added-time equaliser at Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán last night to leave Sevilla in fifth place in the Liga. During their recent slump in form, Sevilla were denied a place in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals after losing 2-1 at home to PFC CSKA Moskva and 3-2 on aggregate. There is some cheer, however, with a Spanish Cup final date with Club Atlético de Madrid to be scheduled in May.
The 46-year-old Jiménez was promoted from Sevilla's youth side to take over from the departing Juande Ramos in 2007 and having led the team to a fifth-placed finish was offered an extended stay as first-team coach. The team improved the following year under Jiménez – Sevilla's record appearance holder – by finishing third.
A club statement said: "The Sevilla board have dismissed Manolo Jimenez. Wednesday's training will be led by Ramón Tejada, pending the board making a definitive decision about the future coach of the team." Tejada steps up from coaching Sevilla Atlético.
