Carlos Tévez scored the only goal as Manchester City FC defeated Chelsea FC to end the champions' perfect start to the Premier League season.

Carlo Ancelotti's side had made an imperious start to their title defence, scoring 21 goals and conceding just one in winning their opening five matches, but were undone by the Argentinian's strike after 59 minutes at the City of Manchester Stadium. After Yaya Touré had created an opening by robbing Ramires of possession, Tévez ran towards goal before beating Petr Čech with a shot from the edge of the box which whistled through Ashley Cole's legs.

City join Arsenal FC – who suffered a 3-2 home defeat by fifth-placed West Bromwich Albion FC in the shock of the nascent Premier League season – and Manchester United FC on 11 points, although Chelsea remain top with 15. United can narrow the gap at Bolton Wanderers FC on Sunday.

There was derby joy for West Ham United FC and Blackburn Rovers FC as they respectively got the better of Tottenham Hotspur FC and Blackpool FC, while the remaining three matches were draws, including Liverpool FC's struggles continuing as they were held 2-2 at home by Sunderland AFC.
