Didier Drogba instigated Arsenal FC's downfall again as Chelsea FC moved four points clear at the top of the Premier League with a 2-0 win against their London rivals.

The Ivory Coast striker notched his 13th goal in as many matches against the Gunners to give Carlo Ancelotti's charges the lead after 39 minutes, and Alex completed the scoring with a rasping 25-metre free-kick five minutes from time. Arsène Wenger's men – seven points off the pace in fourth – have now lost their last five meetings with Chelsea in all competitions.

Liverpool FC are in the bottom three after a shock 2-1 defeat at home by promoted Blackpool FC. The visitors were two goals up at the break through Charlie Adam's penalty and a Luke Varney strike, and Sotirios Kyrgiakos's 53rd-minute effort could not spark a revival for Roy Hodgson's beleaguered side.

Fellow UEFA Europa League contenders Manchester City FC fared better, beating Newcastle United FC 2-1 to rise to second. Carlos Tévez's fifth goal of the season was cancelled out quickly by Jonás Gutiérrez, but in-form England international Adam Johnson (75) kept up the encouraging form of Roberto Mancini's men.
