PSV hit double figures on dark day for Feyenoord

PSV Eindhoven coach Fred Rutten and hat-trick hero Jonathan Reis both had plenty to be proud of after a remarkable encounter in which the Eredivisie leaders swept aside Feyenoord 10-0.

PSV are unbeaten this season and their fortunes skyrocketed on Sunday thanks to three goals from Reis, two from both Balázs Dzsudzsák and Jeremain Lens and one apiece for Ibrahim Afellay, Ola Toivonen and Orlando Engelaar. The result equalled the club's record margin of victory, following similar triumphs against Go Ahead Eagles in 1973 and FC Volendam in 1998, while for Feyenoord – who had Kelvin Leerdam dismissed when just one down – it was the heaviest defeat in their history and left them fourth from bottom.

"I am proud, especially because of the way we played in the second half," said Rutten, whose side were just 2-0 up at the interval. "Against ten men, we were very disciplined and kept a high tempo. When you keep possession so well, spaces will automatically appear. In the past we sat back a bit when we were in the lead, but today there was an enormous drive to register a big win."

Though PSV fell short of AFC Ajax's Eredevisie record victory – 12-1 against Vitesse – it was nevertheless a glum day for Mario Been and his beaten side. "I feel so embarrassed and ashamed," said Been. "Because I'm in charge, I feel responsible. We have been humiliated 10-0 by PSV. This is a black page in our history and it hurts."

In contrast, Reis was all smiles after taking his tally to seven goals in four games. "We played very well all match long and kept on playing good football," said the 21-year-old striker. "We kept on going and scored ten goals, which is historic for the club. The most important thing is to keep on winning and become champions, however. I want to continue like this and keep on working very hard because only with hard work will I get far. I want to play as much as possible and help my team-mates and PSV by scoring goals."
