FC Porto started the new year by losing for the first time in 37 matches in all competitions, succumbing 2-1 at home to CD Nacional on Matchday 1 of the Portuguese League Cup third round.

Unbeaten since losing the final of last season's competition to SL Benfica on 21 March, the Liga leaders had looked on course to start 2011 with a Group A win when Hulk converted a 64th-minute penalty. However, the visitors responded with two goals in seven minutes from Anselmo, his first coming after a mistake by Porto goalkeeper Paweł Kieszek before he headed in João Aurélio's cross.

The setback was also Porto's first under the stewardship of André Villas-Boas, who said: "We should have done more in the first half. We improved in the second half but we made the mistakes that allowed Nacional to score. We have to reflect on this. Their second goal came late and we couldn't manage to overturn the result."

Elsewhere, Benfica started their defence of the trophy with a 2-0 home win against CS Marítimo in Group B. Porto will look to start another long unbeaten sequence when they host Marítimo in the league on Saturday.
