Football Association of Iceland president re-elected

Geir Thorsteinsson has been re-elected as president of the Football Association of Iceland (KSÍ), for a third term, at the KSÍ's annual congress in Reykjavik on Saturday. His term of office will run until 2013.

A former player, coach and referee for KR Reykjavík in the Icelandic capital, Mr Thorsteinsson moved on to become the club's secretary, board member and vice-president. He then went to work for the KSÍ, taking over as general manager in 1997 before becoming president in 2007.

During his presidency, the KSÍ has given considerable emphasis to educating coaches and building up facilities. There are now seven indoor sports halls around the country as well as 111 outdoor mini-pitches. These have helped Iceland's footballing achievements – the women's team became the Nordic nation's first representative at a major final tournament by qualifying for UEFA Women's EURO 2009, and the men's Under-21 team have now qualified for the UEFA European U21 Championship in Denmark this summer.

Mr Thorsteinsson, 46, said that the aim was to strengthen the men's senior national team and to reinforce football unity in Iceland. With hard work at club and association levels starting to bearing fruit in terms of player development, attendances were at a record high in the top flight last season. "I look forward to the coming years," the KSÍ president said. "The unity in the football movement is good. Our association is strong, and the progress made in recent years has given us many promising players – we will continue that good work."
