Hamburger SV may have been on the wrong end of a 6-0 scoreline last weekend but the Rothosen recovered from that humbling at FC Bayern München with six goals of their own against 1. FC Köln.

Mladen Petrić's first-half hat-trick and strikes by Änis Ben-Hatira (32), Gojko Kačar (52) and Zé Roberto (58) completed a resounding 6-2 success in Michael Oenning's first game in temporary charge. It takes Hamburg to within two points of sixth-placed 1. FC Nürnberg, beaten 3-1 by SV Werder Bremen.

Borussia Dortmund dropped points for the second successive match as Petar Slišković's equaliser (89) for 1. FSV Mainz 05 stunned the hosts, who lost to TSG 1899 Hoffenheim last weekend. To compound matters for the leaders Nuri Şahin had a penalty saved shortly after Mats Hummels's opener (8). Victory against FC Schalke 04 on Sunday will take Bayer 04 Leverkusen to within seven points of Dortmund.

After suffering UEFA Champions League heartbreak in midweek, Bayern returned to winning ways, but Louis van Gaal's men left it late to overcome SC Freiburg 2-1. Franck Ribéry hit the decisive goal (88) after Papiss Demba Cissé (17) had cancelled out Mario Gomez's 19th Bundesliga strike this term.

Hannover 96 are two points clear of the champions after Didier Ya Konan (38) and Mohammed Abdellaoue (53) helped the hosts overcome Hoffenheim 2-0, while FC St Paul's fifth successive league defeat – a 2-1 reverse at Eintracht Frankfurt – sucked the Hamburg-based outfit into the bottom three.
