VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach's Roman Neustädter will join UEFA Europa League contenders FC Schalke 04 in the summer after agreeing a free transfer.

The holding midfielder, 23, an ever-present for the Foals this season, has signed a four-year contract, with Schalke general manager Horst Heldt saying: "Roman is a young, free German player who has performed consistently in his position. He is playing inconspicuously but really well and has a good range of passing."

Neustädter was born in Ukraine while his father, former Kazakhstan international Peter Neustädter, was playing for FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk, but started his career with his father in Germany at 1. FSV Mainz, moving to Mönchengladbach in 2009. He is the second major player set to leave the club this summer, with Marco Reus bound for Borussia Dortmund.

Schalke meet FC Viktoria Plzeň in the UEFA Europa League round of 32 on 16 and 23 February, with the first match being played in the Czech Republic.
