Degen brothers reunited at Basel

David Degen has left BSC Young Boys to return to his old club FC Basel 1893 on a three-year contract.

The midfielder, 29, will be reunited with his twin brother Philipp at Basel, where David spent his first spell between 2003 and 2006. After a year at VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach he rejoined the club on loan in the 2007/08 season before signing for Young Boys, where he made 106 league appearances, scoring 17 goals. Basel will hope he can fill the gap left by Xherdan Shaqiri's departure for FC Bayern München.

Philipp Degen made his own return to FCB last November after his contract with Liverpool FC was cancelled, and his own stay at St. Jakob-Park has now been extended until June 2015, the same end date as his brother's. This is not the only business completed by the Swiss double winners who announced 24 hours earlier the signing of central midfielder Marcelo Díaz from CFP Universidad de Chile.

The 25-year-old Chilean international, who has signed a four-year deal, will remain with Universidad until the start of July at the earliest because of key fixtures in their domestic championship play-offs and the Copa Libertadores.
