FC Bayern München halted a run of five successive losses to Borussia Dortmund by defeating their title rivals 2-1 in the German Super Cup.
The most recent of those defeats, which stretch back over the last two seasons, came in the domestic cup final in May, when Robert Lewandowski scored a hat-trick during a 5-2 win for the all-conquering Bundesliga champions.
The Poland striker was on target against the Bavarians once more at the Fußball Arena München, though this time his goal was mere consolation following strikes in the first 11 minutes from summer signing Mario Mandžukić and Thomas Müller.
Mandžukić set Bayern en route to their fourth Super Cup triumph by turning in Franck Ribéry's audacious cross, which the France winger had delivered with the outside of his right foot from the left flank.
The new arrival from VfL Wolfsburg also played a major role in the second goal, releasing Arjen Robben with a defence-splitting pass. Though the Dutch international's shot struck the far post, Müller was following up to rifle in the rebound.
Lewandowski gave Dortmund a glimmer of hope with a quarter of an hour remaining, turning neatly on the edge of the penalty area and stroking a shot beyond Manuel Neuer. The Bundesliga begins on 24 August with Dortmund hosting SV Werder Bremen. Bayern visit newcomers SpVgg Greuther Fürth the following day.
