Last season's runners-up, FC Bayern München laid down a marker for the new campaign with a convincing 3-0 away win against Bundesliga debutants SpVgg Greuther Fürth, while VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach opened with a 2-1 success at home against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim.

Given a stern first-half examination, Bayern ended their opponents' resolve two minutes before the break when Thomas Müller opened the scoring from close range. New arrival Mario Mandžukić followed up Arjen Robben's parried shot to make it two, before Robben turned goalscorer 11 minutes from time after his cross deflected in off Bernd Nehrig.

Reeling from their UEFA Champions League play-off defeat by FC Dynamo Kyiv in midweek, Mönchengladbach responded in the best possible way. Mike Hanke's 33rd-minute opener was cancelled out by midfielder Roberto Firmino, but Juan Arango struck on 79 minutes to secure the points.

Back in the Bundesliga following a 15-year hiatus, Fortuna Düsseldorf 1895 marked their return in style, overcoming FC Augsburg 2-0. 1. FC Nürnberg also tasted away success by condemning Hamburger SV to a 1-0 defeat, while 1. FSV Mainz 05 came from behind to claim a 1-1 draw against SC Freiburg.

In the late kick-offs, Eintracht Frankfurt beat Bayer 04 Leverkusen 2-1, with VfL Wolfsburg snatching a last-gasp winner at VfB Stuttgart in the evening's final game.
