Birkirkara FC midfielder Paul Fenech has been named the Maltese player of the year for his impressive displays last term.

A key member of the side that clinched the Maltese Premier League crown after defeating Hibernians FC in a historic title decider, the 26-year-old topped the end-of-season poll on 53 points – four more than team-mate and captain Gareth Sciberras.

"To be honest, with such nominees I did not expect to win, but now I am very happy – just like crossing the finishing line after a long marathon," the 16-cap Maltese international, who scored twice in 29 league appearances, told UEFA.com after receiving the accolade for the first time.

On what was a special night for Birkirkara, Paul Zammit was voted coach of the year and midfielder Rowen Muscat received the best goal award.
