Powell sets out stall for England against France

England coach Hope Powell confirmed she will make changes as the 2009 runners-up play for their UEFA Women's EURO 2013 lives against Group C winners France on Thursday in Linkoping.

While France are through after beating Russia and Spain, England managed only one point against those teams. Still, a win would book progress and Powell said: "We have not performed. We just have to hope it clicks." Her opposite number Bruno Bini, meanwhile, vowed to go for the win out of respect for the tournament and his team's travelling fans.

Permuations
• France have won the group and face either Denmark or Iceland here on Monday in the last quarter-final.

• England will be through with a win, but finish second (and play Norway on Monday in Kalmar) only if they and Russia win, and only if the latter fail to do enough to match England's goal difference or goals scored (if both finish level, England will be second due to their coefficient as per Article 8.05 of the official competition regulations).

• If both Russia and England lose, neither could go through as the best third-placed team. If one or both draw, two points would only be enough to get them into the third-placed drawing of lots with Denmark for the last quarter-final slot at 23.30CET on Thursday in Norrkoping (where England or Russia's opponents would be Sweden in Halmstad on Sunday). If both draw, England finish third on goal difference and go into that draw.

We are here to win games. We deeply respect the competition and the game because we realise that when we don't respect the game, the game doesn't respect you. We are going to choose a team to win the game; I don't see what else we could do. There might be 300 or 400 people who came from France [to Sweden]; they deserve some respect. Some people make sacrifices all year long to come here. That's why we have to respect these people. This affects us a lot.

We benefit from a certain comfort and it allows us to plan ahead. When you have to wait until the last day to qualify, you have to think about all the different scenarios. For three days, we only think of one scenario: we will play the quarter-final here and we will stay in our camp. We can think five days ahead and this is really comfortable. Usually, we can only think about the next day. It's good.

[About England's results] Nothing surprises me. I watch the games, I watch the results. There's no need to be surprised or not surprised, that's the way it is. You know, the competition is only a few games old, anything can happen. Nothing tells us that England won't be European champions.

There will be changes. If anybody asks me what are the changes I'm not going to say. It isn't through lack of effort; we [have to] get something out of this game if we want to stay in it. We have to get something or we will be going home. I can't fault the effort, it's just not clicking for us at this moment in time and hopefully it does tomorrow.

In the last couple of years, we've done really well. We stamped our mark on women's football globally, if you include the Olympics in that, and all the games before we haven't lost. It's just unfortunate you come to a major tournament and the expectation sometimes is you should be there or thereabouts at the end. But it is a tough tournament and we have not performed. We just have to hope it clicks.

There's no cutting corners on this; if we don't perform, and we win, I'll be happy, The idea is we have to stay in the tournament. We haven't performed. We know that, we'll accept that, and the girls are working really hard to make sure that doesn't happen tomorrow. Hopefully we can start the tournament properly.

[France are] very good; they back themselves to go all the way. They've got out of the group though I don't think that is going to have any bearing on the way they play tomorrow. They will want to get maximum points. So we know what to expect but we are going to give it a good go.

• Substitue Toni Duggan came up with a timely first competitive goal to salvage England's campaign. Kelly Smith made her first appearance at any level since March following a shin injury.

Team news
Left-winger Rachel Yankey went off early against Russia with a tight hamstring and according to Powell is definitely out. Central defender Sophie Bradley missed the first two matches with an ankle injury and left-back Stephanie Houghton has also been struggling with fitness, having been taken off early against Russia, but both are available, as is Smith, who was rested for training on Wednesday.

Match fact
Two of the first nations to set up women's national teams, England beat France 3-0 in Brion on 22 April 1973 and 2-0 in Wimbledon on 11 November 1974. That was England's last defeat of Les Bleues and they have lost six of 13 meetings since, most recently drawing two friendlies and before that falling to France on penalties in the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup quarter-finals.

In one of Powell's last games for England before stepping up to become coach, England lost 3-2 to France on 15 February 1998 in Alencon. Rachel Brown and Yankey came off the bench for England while Sandrine Soubeyrand started for France.
